Peacefully on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, Marguerite Garey went home to be with the Lord at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System - HJ Heinz Campus where she had resided since 2007. Ms. Garey had lived in the North Braddock area for 37 years prior to her illness. Marguerite was born August 26, 1924 in Braddock, PA to the late Algia, Sr. and Daisy (Cheatham) Garey.
Ms. Garey was educated in the Braddock School system and graduated in 1944. She enlisted in the United States Army in April of 1949 and served this country for 21 years with tours in Germany, Hawaii and San Francisco. She was honorable discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1970. Marguerite returned to the Braddock area and was employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the Department of Public Welfare as a caseworker, retiring in 1984 after 15 years of service.
Marguerite loved the Lord and joined Bethel Baptist Church at the age of 15 and served in several leadership positions. She was an avid reader and could hold a conversation on everything from world events to politics to religion. She loved bowling as well as baseball and softball. Ms. Garey played on her Army base softball team and received several trophies for her pitching skills.
She leaves behind her sister, Jeanette Stanton, niece and caretaker, Sharon Benjamin, devoted godson, Kevin Lee of Tampa Florida and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Algia Garey, Jr. and two sisters Ella Jackson and Shirley Everett
