Ray Russell, Sr. was born on May 12, 1930 to the late Bishop Claude Russell, Sr. and the late Pearl Lena Roland in Republic, Pennsylvania. Ray passed away on January 28, 2014 at Duke Hospital in Durham, North Carolina surrounded by his loving family.
Ray was lovingly given the nickname "Baby Ray" by his sister Anna when he was born. Ray grew up and was educated in South Huntingdon Township, Rusdale, Pennsylvania before joining the United States Army. Ray was honorably discharged from service in September 1960.
Ray held membership with the Pride of the West Lodge No. 84 and for many years enjoyed his position as a Mason. While residing in the Pittsburgh area, Ray frequently attended Galilee Baptist Church in Homewood, where he enjoyed the fellowship and the preached word.
Ray was employed by the United States Steel Corporation for 19 years before being laid off. Following that layoff, Ray went to work at Penn Automotive in Homestead, PA working over 40 years until retiring due to health issues.
Ray loved his family and also his friends. He had an infectious smile and an outgoing personality. He enjoyed working on cars and electronics and was quite the handyman at home.
Ray was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Denise Russell-Bristol; sister, Dorothy Russell-Graham; brothers: Daniel, Joseph, James and John Russell.
Surviving to cherish memory and maintain his legacy are his beloved children: Raylene, Earl and Ray, Jr., all of Durham, North Carolina, and Danielle Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Sister Anna Russell-Nobel of Pittsburgh; Elder Claude Russell III of Toledo, Ohio; and Elder Roosevelt Russell of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Many people were drawn to Ray for his strength of character, his warmth of heart, caring for others and exuberant love of life
