Sarah
Reed
May 23, 1935 — Sep 2, 2026
West Mifflin
Sarah Azilia (Moore) Reed was born in Herminie, Pennsylvania, on May 23, 1935, to Hannah (Foster) and Henry Moore. She was the 8th of 9 children and grew up with her family in Herminie, in Westmoreland County.
Sarah attended public school in the Yough School District and graduated from Yough High School in 1953.
Sarah met the love of her life, John, when they were both employed at Federal Enamel in McKees Rocks. John and Sarah married on May 12, 1956, and remained married until his passing. They settled in Beltzhoover, where they raised their three daughters.
Sarah stayed home with her children until the youngest started school and then went on to work at Heinz (now Kraft Heinz) for more than 20 years before retiring in 1997.
Sarah was a brilliant seamstress, a wonderful cook, and a great mathematician with a wicked sense of humor — all gifts she used in service to her family, friends, church, and community. So many young women wore beautiful, unique, "Sarah-created" dresses to their proms, graduations, and even weddings, because she was always willing to transform her dining room into a sewing studio on behalf of those she loved.
Sarah was an active member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where she served as a Cora L. Cheatham Willing Worker, a member of the Steward and Stewardess boards, and sang in St. Paul's mass choir (even convincing her love, John, to join the Men's Choir). Sarah was also a member of the Bell Tanner Missionary Society and led the Young People's Department for a number years. At every church event, as long as she was able, Sarah could be found cooking, serving, and cleaning.
Sarah is preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Hannah and Henry; daughters, Sharon and Tina; grandson, Gordon John; sons-in-law, Gordon Vincent and Thomas; and siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Ruffin, Robin DeVaughn, and Tracey Armant (Jay); seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Viewing for Sarah Reed is Saturday September 12, 2026 at St. Paul AME 400 Orchard Pl, Pittsburgh,Pa. 15210 at 9am. Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am interment Allegheny Cemetery.
