Birney Smith Obituary

Age 91, transitioned on February 10, 2020.  Birney , born August 10, 1928, was the only child of the late William and Irene Smith in McIntyre, Ohio.  He graduated from Bloomingdale High School and went on to Wilberforce University.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952 and married his beloved wife Emma one years after leaving the Army.  They moved to Pittsburgh, where he started his job at the U.S. Postal Service.  Birney found St. Paul A.M.E Church where he served every Sunday.  He served on the usher board, church secretary, the Men's Choir, and the food pantry.  He also offered to ride people to and from church as needed.

He was employed by the Postal service for 36 years.  After retiring, he cared for his grandchildren and took in anyone else who was in need.  On February 10, 1987, under the recommendation of Past Master Irwin Richards, Birney became a full-fledged Master Mason with Melita Lodge no117.  He also cared for his beloved wife Emma and stood by her side through her illness and transition in 2010.

On February 10, 2020, Birney made his heavenly transition.  He leaves to cherish his memories his son Birney (Linda) Smith, daughter Emma P. Smith, three grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.  Visitation Friday, February 14, 2020 4pm-8pm  Service Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 10:30 am at St. Paul A.M.E Church.
